Last week Faith and Jesse spent a couple of days with Aunt Becky in Fayetteville, so Hunter and I had a chance to spend some time together doing what he wanted to do. I told him we could spend one day doing whatever he wanted to do.....he chose the zoo. It was a little warm, but we had such a good day. It's not often I get to spend time with Hunter when I'm not distracted by the needs of the younger two. We both really enjoyed the quality time together...we had some good conversations. On the way to the zoo we had a long discussion about childbirth and the new baby on the way that began with "Hey, Mom, why do you have your babies at home? Aren't you supposed to go to the hospital?" I started by explaining to him that we are not
supposed to do anything just because that's what's normal or expected in society today. We went all the way back to the Garden of Eden and talked about the part of the curse that was specific to Eve regarding childbirth. I explained to him that I was choosing to have this baby at home, naturally, partly because that is how God intended it to be and that women are perfectly capable of having a baby without medical intervention and without pain control. I explained to him that childbirth today has become mostly a matter of convenience for both the mom and the doctor, and that many doctors are even able to convince young mothers to schedule the birth of their child around their golf game!! (It is apalling to me how women can be talked into giving away all of their decision making power during one of the most significant events in their life for someone else's convenience.) Lastly, we talked about how God's will would be done regardless of whether I was at home or in a hospital. Hunter asked lots of questions and added lots of comments, and seemed satisfied with my reasoning. His last comment on the subject was "I guess that makes sense"
